About Us

How We Began

EnlightenNext, a nonprofit educational organization, was established by spiritual teacher and visionary Andrew Cohen in 1988.* From the beginning of his teaching career, Cohen has been convinced that spiritual transformation is not merely an individual matter, but holds a far more significant potential to bring about a revolutionary transformation in collective human consciousness and culture. In a dynamic partnership with Cohen, we at EnlightenNext are attempting to make that vision a reality.

As our name indicates, EnlightenNext is about spiritual enlightenment in the context of today's (and tomorrow's) rapidly changing world. Inspired and informed by Andrew Cohen's teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment—an original spiritual philosophy and practice for the 21st century—our many publications, programs, and activities offer the direct experience of higher human potentials and the tools to transform ourselves for the sake of our collective evolution. As an organization, we are committed to pioneering a new and enlightened expression of human life at this critical juncture in history.

Where We've Come To

Over the years, EnlightenNext has grown into a worldwide network of members and centers. We've expanded not only the breadth of our activities but also our collaborative work with other organizations and individuals at the leading edge of progressive thought. Contributors include Integral philosopher Ken Wilber, cosmologist Brian Swimme, futurist and environmental advocate Duane Elgin, Spiral Dynamics proponent Don Beck, and founder of the State of the World Forum Jim Garrison, among many others.

Many people have come to know EnlightenNext through our international, award-winning magazine What Is Enlightenment? Initiated by Andrew Cohen in 1991 as a sixteen-page newsletter with no professionally-trained writers or designers, it has evolved into a 144-page, full-color quarterly available today at major newsstands and bookstores. Reaching 100,000 people in several different languages, on four continents, What Is Enlightenment? has become one of our most powerful vehicles for igniting the spirit of inquiry and transformation. From religion to politics, business to cosmology, science to sociology, What Is Enlightenment? magazine is making it possible for people around the world to engage with the constantly unfolding edge of spiritual and philosophical inquiry.

These include Integral philosopher Ken Wilber, cultural critic Thomas de Zengotita, and President of the Association for Global New Thought Michael Beckwith, among many others.

Our Centers

EnlightenNext is made up of a dedicated staff supported by equally dedicated volunteers. Core groups manage the activities of each center, the largest being our international home base in Lenox, Massachusetts. We have another major center in London and smaller but thriving hubs of activity and spiritual practice in New York, Boston, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Paris, and Rishikesh, India. In addition, an international network of members use global communication technologies in an ongoing exploration into the evolution of consciousness. In this way, EnlightenNext is helping to bring more and more people together in the most meaningful endeavor of our times.

Where Are We Headed?

We are committed to building a network of individuals and organizations united in their shared passion for change. It is our belief that in the spirit of evolutionary collaboration, constantly reaching towards a higher view on our human predicament, we can create new pathways in consciousness to liberate our fullest collective potential. Always aspiring to become more aligned with the creative evolutionary impulse at the heart of life itself, EnlightenNext is constantly learning, growing, and changing in every aspect of our organization, our work, our relationships, and our life on earth. We are dedicated to the future. Join us in our efforts to create a revolution in human consciousness and culture.
